Male-on-Male Harassment Suit Settled
The first male-on-male sexual harassment lawsuit has been settled, with $1.9 million going to a group who claimed it was verbally and physically harassed by coworkers. A year ago, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that same-sex harassment may violate federal antidiscrimination law. The company involved, a meat-packing business in Minnesota, has admitted no wrongdoing.

Workplace Rudeness Blamed on Men
A new study concludes that rude behavior in the workplace is on the rise -- and men are to blame. While rudeness is aimed at both men and women in equal numbers, the researchers found that 70% of the disrespectful incidents were originated by men. The researchers say they hope to make organizations aware of the "dollar cost" of widespread incivility.

More State and Local Government Jobs
The Census Bureau reports that state and local governments are hiring more workers -- 14.5 million people were employed by local and state governments across the nation as of March 1998. A year earlier, the figure was 14.2 million. Local governments employ 10.5 million, with another 3.9 million on state government payrolls.

U.S. Workers Are Angry
As many as one in four U.S. workers may be chronically angry on the job, according to a new report from the Yale School of Management. Enraged employees also more prone to being bored, having low energy and feeling "stuck" in their jobs. Most likely to make workers angry: a boss or supervisor, a fellow employee, others in the workplace who are not being productive and tight deadlines or heavy workloads.

Pentagon Encourages Breast-feeding
The Pentagon, one of the nation's most male-oriented workplaces, has been changing with the times: A small room in the military bastion has been set aside for breast-feeding. The Pentagon equipped the room with state-of-the-art breast pumps to be used by nursing employees. Analysts say the trend may grow, as Congress and state legislatures consider measures to protect and encourage breast-feeding by mothers who work.
