Preparing for a Second Interview by Sylvia Ho I had a very good initial phone interview with a search committee for the job of president at a nonprofit organization. They informed me I am one of the three remaining candidates and will bring me back for a second interview. Will the theme of the questions be different than in my first interview? Initial interviews are more of a screening mechanism; they do not delve into subject matter or chemistry like second interviews do. If your second interview involves different people, you might be asked some of the same questions that you answered in your initial interview. Also, you may meet with a number of different people who will most likely ask very similar questions. Generally, these questions will probe at two specific areas:
Your skill sets and accomplishments are often explored in the first interview, while the second interview generally focuses on your fit with the organization and your knowledge of the industry. It is important to know as much information about the company and the job as possible prior to a second interview. It would also be helpful to have an understanding of the organization's corporate culture. You can research this information through trade magazines, the Internet and by talking to other people in the field who are familiar with the company. Use this information to your advantage during the second interview. For example, if a company has an innovative philosophy, highlight your creative skills and how they contributed to your success in previous jobs. This will give you an edge over the competition. Also, understanding a potential employer's corporate culture and philosophy will help you make an informed decision as to whether the work environment and company are right for you. Good luck! |
